Abstract

This thesis explores the examination of impoliteness strategies utilized by individuals in the comment section of Sam Smith's tweets on his Twitter account during his satanic-themed performance at the 65th Grammy Award. The aim of this study is to identify and characterize the different types of impoliteness employed by readers, along with the factors influencing their usage. Culpeper's (1996) proposed theory of impoliteness strategies is employed to analyze this particular form of impoliteness. Additionally, Culpeper's (2011) theory of impoliteness functions is applied. The findings of this study are presented in a descriptive manner using tabular representation. The analysis reveals the presence of 18 utterances containing five types of impoliteness strategies used by readers. These types include (1) Negative Impoliteness, occurring 7 times (38,9%); (2) Positive Impoliteness, occurring 4 times (22,2%); (3) Mock Politeness, occurring 5 times (27,8%); (4) Bald On Record Impoliteness, occurring 1 time (5,6%); and Withhold Impoliteness, occurring 1 time (5,6%). The most frequently employed impoliteness strategy is the Negative Impoliteness that occured 7 times, as netizens canceling Sam Smith because of his performance controversy and indicting him as a satanist. Netizens refer to Sam Smith using negative and humiliating terms and employ offensive language. Two functions out of three were identified in the utterances. Based on this study, affective impoliteness emerged as the most prevalent function utilized by readers, with 13 instances, or 72,2%. This is due to Sam‟s “Unholy” demonic performance that triggers arrays of emotional responses among netizens, leading them to offensively expressing their dissapointment on Sam Smith post performance tweet. Entertaining impoliteness ranked as the second most common function, with 5 instances or 27,8% observed in Sam Smith‟s tweets. Coercive Impoliteness as the third function is not found in the tweet comments.
