Abstract

In this thesis the writer discusses the speech act of refusal in the movie Venom Let There Be Carnage. This research aims to identify the type and the structural form of the speech act of refusal used by the character when performing refusal in the movie. In conducting this research, the writer uses a qualitative approach. In collecting the data, the writer observed by watching a movie entitled Venom Let There Be Carnage (2021) repeatedly and carefully. The speech act theory developed by John Searle (1979) is used to identify types of speech acts that are connected with refusal. The structural form theory developed by George Yule (1996) is used to identify the structural form in refusal. The data analysis is presented descriptively. From this research, it was found that there were 16 refusal utterances used by the character. From the 16 data, the writer found 5 types of refusal speech acts used by the character. They are assertively containing 7 data, expressive containing 4 data, directive containing 3 data, commissive containing 1 data, and declaration containing 1 data. From 16 data, the writer found 2 of 3 structural forms from refusal speech acts used by the character. They are declarative containing 15 data, imperative containing 1 data, and for interrogative the writer cannot find the data. The most dominant type of refusal speech act is assertive and the most dominant structural form of refusal speech act is declarative. Most of the characters use this structural form because in this refusal there is information to the hearer that the speaker wants to deliver via their refusal utterance. Most of the characters use this type of refusal speech act because the speaker often performs refusal and after their refusal, there is a statement of fact, assertion, and declarations. Therefore, the assertive helps the hearer to believe the reason for the speaker’s rejection because the speaker performs refusal with assertion and contains a statement of fact. The speaker performs declarative because they want to convey clear information to the hearer by performing refusal, to avoid the ambiguity between the speaker and the hearer.
