Abstract

This research examines the impoliteness strategies used by the main character of After Ever Happy. This study aims to identify the types of impoliteness used by the main character of After Ever Happy and their functions. The data collection technique used in this study was non-participant observational. The data were analyzed using the impoliteness theory proposed by Culpeper (1996) and the functions of impoliteness by Culpeper (2011). The results of the analysis of this study are presented descriptively in the form of paragraphs and tables. Based on the results of this study, there are 33 utterances containing five types of impoliteness used by the main character of After Ever Happy. The five types of impoliteness are (1) Bald on record impoliteness 11 times (33.33%), (2) Positive impoliteness 16 times (48.48%), (3) Negative impoliteness (9.09%), (4) sarcasm or mock politeness 2 times (6.06%), and (5) Withhold politeness 1 time (3.03%). The type of impoliteness that often appears is positive impoliteness because the main character often uses taboo words and ignores the other person's feelings. The most dominant function of impoliteness is affective impoliteness. There are 32 utterances containing affective impoliteness and only 1 utterance containing entertaining impoliteness. The function of impoliteness that is not found is coercive impoliteness because this function usually occurs when the speaker has a higher social status than the listener. Whereas, in this film the main characters has the same social status.
