Abstract
This thesis discusses several issues of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and defense mechanism described by Paula Stokes through the main character in the novel Girl Against the Universe. In this study, the writer uses psychoanalytical theory by Sigmund Freud and self defense mechanism by Anna Freud. The analysis presented in this thesis is intended to look at the influence of trauma from the past on the main character’s personality and self defense mechanism that are carried out intentionally or unintentionally. The results of this analysis show that trauma from the past can influence the main character personality where she became an introvert and isolate herself from society. In addition, the main character is able to survive the trauma that haunts her by using self defense mechanism.
