Abstract

Xerostomia is the subjective complaint of dry mouth that affects several stomatological functions that drives to the detriment of the quality life patient’s. Xerostomia cause oral discomforts and the symptoms make tasks difficulty such as swallowing, masticating, speaking, and increase dental complication. The underlying etiology of xerostomia are local and systemic factors. Diagnosis of xerostomia are subjective and objective oral examination. Treatment of xerostomia is needed to recover the functions of saliva using saliva substitute. Saliva substitute can be the treatment options because it has the effect of hydrating, protect mucosa and antimicroba. The aim of this study is to find that saliva substitute can give affects to reduce the symptoms in xerostomia. The study was conducted by collecting and analysing various scientific literature about the effect of saliva substitute in xerostomia patient. The conclusion is the use of saliva substitute decreasing the intensity of xerostomia as well as improvement in the quality of life i.e difficulty swallowing, inhibiting microbial growth, improved buffering capacities, reduce the risk of infection, and yeast count Keywords : Xerostomia, Saliva substitute
