Abstract

This thesis analyzes Marcus Clarke's novel "For the Terms of His Natural Life" and its depiction of male and female characters in the Australian Gothic tradition. Through examining language, imagery, and characterization, this thesis argues that Clarke effectively captures the dark and unsettling nuances of the genre, highlighting the harsh realities of life in the Australian penal colony. Furthermore, this thesis explores the contrasting depictions of male and female characters, arguing that male characters are depicted as brutal and violent, reflecting the harshness of the surrounding environment and the brutal nature of the colonial system. In contrast, female characters are often depicted as victims. , their suffering became a symbol of the oppression and cruelty of the colonial system. Overall, this thesis argues that "For the Terms of His Natural Life" is a powerful and thought-provoking work that explores the darker aspects of human nature and the Australian colonial experience, making it a significant contribution to the Australian Gothic literary tradition.
