Abstract

Electronic cigarettes are battery-powered nicotine delivery devices that heat up a special liquid solution with similar method to tobacco cigarettes. Initially electronic cigarettes were introduced as one method to stop smoking. However, lately found various harmful contents in electronic cigarettes so that their use has been banned in various countries. Although banned, there is an increasing in the number of electronic cigarette users in the world, especially among teenagers. The objective of this study is to find out the profile of electronic cigarette users in senior high school students in Padang Cities. This study is descriptive study with stratified random sampling technique. Samples in this study are students from SMAN 1, SMAN 3 and SMAN 10 Padang in the academic year 2018-2019 using the Global Youth Tobacco Survey questionnaire 2018 edition. The results of this study are 26.21% of high school students who use electronic cigarettes, 44.44% of them try electronic cigarettes for the first time at the age of 16-17 years. Based on the characteristics of electronic cigarette users, 37.04% of students were 16 years old, 81.48% were male, 37.04% were in class XI and 48.15% had spending Rp.21,000-Rp.30,000 per day. 13.59% get electronic cigarettes from vape shops and 13.59% use electronic cigarettes because they are available in various flavors. It were obtained that 31.07%, 40.78%, 46.60% and 64.08% respectively students never saw electronic cigarette promotional advertisements on the internet, television, magazines and newspapers. The conclusion is there were more than a quarter of the students of Senior High School Students in Padang academic year 2018-2019 using electronic cigarettes.
