Abstract

Water is the main need of people because human cannot survive without water. People need water to do reproductive work and for productive purpose. The earthquake that happened in Padang City on September 30th, 2009 damaged the facilities of Water Resource Agency. It was observed that the 7.6 RS earthquake in Padang resulted in the degradation on water resources utilized by farming and sea fishery households. As survival efforts, farming and sea fishery households set up adaption on such matters. This study aims to analyze and compare the impacts of earthquake on water utilization in farming and sea fishery households and to analyze and compare the adaptation in water utilization of farming and sea fishery households because of the earthquake. These villages are located in the same district, Koto Tangah. Fifteen women and fifteen men in each village were interviewed by in-depth interview with the total of 60 respondents. By using tabulation, graph and sustainable livelihood (SL) and gender perspective, it can be concluded that earthquake as one of natural disasters gave different impacts on different community and gender. In this case, sea fishery household in Pasir Nan Tigo was more vulnerable than farming household in Sungai Lareh. In case of gender, women are more vulnerable rather than men. In adaptation, sea fishery household in Pasir Nan Tigo can survive even the earthquake damaged the wells and changed the quality of water. They survived by consuming water gallon and made water pump, but they used muddy water from well for reproductive work, such as washing the cloth, taking a bath and cleaning food. It made people in risk of disease and women’s works becamed multipled than before. To anticipate the earthquake in the future, the government should provide the reserves of clean water in every sub district. The mechanism of providing clean water can be adapted from the analysis of livelihood resources. Keywords: Water utilization, Sustainable Livelihood, Gender Perspective, Earthquake
