Abstract

This study analyzes the relationship between human and the ignorance toward nature which at the end lead to the understanding, and love towards nature in the novel Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe. This issue reflects the social events of human and British civilization in the 17th and 18th centuries. The writer uses mimetic theory from M. H. Abrams to study the real events occurring in that century as well as the ecocritical theory in connecting the idea of concern for nature conveyed by Defoe. This study used the descriptive qualitative method. The writer finds that Daniel Defoe describes Crusoe's relationship chronologically to man and nature. Where presenting Defoe's views on the early human and nature relationship in course of the ignorance to nature is a problem that will bring over-exploitation to nature, and will eventually bring awareness of the importance of nature to human survival. Key words- Daniel Defoe, Robinson Crusoe, Man and Nature Relationship, Over-Exploitation of Nature ABSTRAK Penelitian ini menganalisis hubungan antara manusia dan ketidakperduli terhadap alam yang mana pada akhirnya akan membawa kesadaran, dan kecintaan pada alam dalam novel Robinson Crusoe karya Daniel Defoe. Permasalahan ini merefleksikan kejadian sosial manusia dan peradaban Inggris pada abad 17 dan 18. Penulis menggunakan teori mimetik dari M. H. Abrams untuk mengkaji kejadian nyata yang terjadi pada abad tersebut serta teori ekokritik dalam menyambungkan ide tentang kepedulian terhadap alam yang disampaikan oleh Defoe. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Penulis menemukan bahwa Daniel Defoe menggambarkan hubungan Crusoe secara kronologis terhadap manusia dan alam. Dimana menampilkan pandangan Defoe terhadap hubungan awal manusia dan alam dalam hal ketidakpedulian terhadap alam merupakan permasalahan yang akan membawa exploitasi berlebihan terhadap alam, dan pada akhirnya akan membawa kesadaran akan pentingnya alam untuk kelangsungan hidup manusia.
