Abstract

This thesis discusses the factors thatcausedidentity crisis and its formation to Third Culture Kids as depicted in A Tale for the Time Being written by Ruth Ozekithrough its main character named Naoko Yasutani. The factors that caused identity crisis and its formation through the main character are the encounter of two different cultures, America and Japan, liminal state and being marginalized by teacher andher classmates—in term of bullying—which she experienced when she repatriated to her homeland in Japan. In this research, the writer uses the concepts from post-colonial criticism which are hybridity, liminality and cultural identity from Homi K. Bhaba and Stuart Hall. Hence, from this research the writer finds that these factors that caused the identity crisis which experienced by the main character who depicts the third culture kids’ identity dilemma brought her to dilemmatic state toward her cultural identity. Lastly, because of those factors the protagonist chooses not to go back to her host country as well as her home country to stay. Key words: identity crisis, expatriate, repatriate, third culture kids, bullying, hybridity, liminality, marginality, cultural identity
