Abstract

Catechin isolate is the active substances contained in gambir consisting of epicatechin, epicatechin-3-gallate, epigallocatechin-3-gallate and epigallocatechin which potentiates to decrease triacylglycerol levels. This study aimed to determine the effect of catechin on triacylglycerol levels of rat induced by high fat diet. This study was experimental study with post test group design. The study was conducted on 25 rats divided into five groups. There were negative control group (K-), positive control (K+), and three treatment groups (P1, P2, P3) induced high fat diet in cow's brain for 14 days. The treatment group were given catechin with dose, 10 mg/kgBB/day, 20 mg/kgBB/day, and 40 mg/kgBB/day for 14 days. Triacylglycerol levels were examined with GPO methods. One way Anova and Post Hoc Tukey HSD tests were used to analyze the data. The result showed that the decrease of triacylglycerol level after given catechin. Levels of triacylglycerol in positive control rats (K+) 147.8±8.5 mg/dL were higher than negative control group and treatment grroup with triacylglycerol levels of 104.6±15.3 mg / dL, 101.4±15.7 mg/dL, 106.4±17.6 mg/dL, and 110±3.2 mg/dL. There was a significant difference between P1, P2, and P3 with positive control with p value, p = 0.014 (p<0.05).The conclusion is catechin isolates can affect triacylglycerol levels.
