Abstract
A methanol extract of Averrhoa carambola L. was studied for its inhibitive on the corrosion of mild steel in a 1 N hydrochloric acid medium, using the metrics of weight loss, and potentiodynamic polarization. The corrosion rate of mild steel and Averrhoa carambola L. inhibition efficiencies were calculated. The inhibition efficiency increased with increase in concentration of Averrhoa carambola L. and increased with temperature. A maximum inhibition efficiency of 87,11 % was achieved using 10 g/L of the inhibitor at 333 K. The adsorption of extract on mild steel surface is consistent with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Polarization measurement indicated that Averrhoa carambola L. acts as a anodic inhibitor. UV-Visible Spectroscopy analysis confirmed the complex formation of Averrhoa carambola L. leaf extract with steel surface. Surface analysis by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) confirmed the formation of protective layer on the steel surface.
