Abstract

Background : Early Childhood Caries is defined as the presence of 1 or more decayed (noncavitated or cavitated lesion), missing (due to caries), or filled surfaces in primary dentition of young children under 71 months of age. Research conducted by Febriana (2007) in five areas in Jakarta showed that the prevalence of Early Childhood Caries in children aged under three years in Jakarta is 52,7% with mean def-t score 2,85. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) states that the risk of potentially dental decay exist for the breast-fed as it does for the bottle-fed child. Caries can affect the child’s ability to sleep, concentrate and eat. And can impact to golden periode. Chronic infection around the tooth-buds of the developing permanent dentition can cause hypoplasia of the developing teeth. Purpose : The aim of this study to determine relationship between breastfeeding pattern and early childhood caries 2-3 years old in Padang. Methode : This study designed cross sectionally with 70 sample children of 2-3 years old in Padang. The technique of the sample used purposive sampling. Collecting data using questionnaires and intra-oral examination were analyzed using Chi-Square test. Result : Statistic result showed that p-value 0,089, there is no significant correlation between breastfeeding pattern and early childhood caries of children 2-3 years old in Padang. Conclusion : There is no significant correlation between breastfeeding pattern and early childhood caries of children 2-3 years old in Padang.
