Abstract
Background: Dental plaque is a soft deposits, colorless, contained bacteria, and attached to the tooth surface. Plaque can be removed by two methods-chemical and mechanical. Chemical plaque control can be done with the use of mouthwash. Catechins gambir are polyphenolic compounds that have the potential as an antibacterial and antioxidant. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of rinsing solution catechin gambir extract inhibiting the formation of dental plaque. Methods: This research used true experimental methode with pretest and posttest control group design. The study was conducted on 20 subjects were divided into two groups, Treatment group used catechin gambir extract mouthwash solution and control group used placebo. Plaque index is calculated using an Turesky-Gilmore-Glickman of Quingley-Hein index twice, the first day as the initial data and the 8th day as the final data. Results: The mean reduction in plaque index rinse with a solution of catechins Gambir higher than gargling with placebo. The test results of Mann Whitney indicated there are significant differences between the mean difference in plaque index decline both groups p = 0.00 (p <0.05). This is because the extract solution catechins gambier are polyphenolic compounds that have antibacterial activity, can prevent adhesion, inhibit the enzyme activity of GTFs and kills plaque forming bacteria. Conclusion: Rinsing solution catechin gambir extracts are effective on inhibit the dental plaque formation. Keywords: catechin, gambier, plaque index, dental plaque
