Abstract

The focus of this study is the 2020 Regional Head Election in West Pasaman resulted in a victory for Hamsuardi and Risnawanto. The win is based on the role played by political brokers supporting candidates. In this study, political brokers are political brokers from social network engines. The purpose of this study is to analyze the distribution of brokers from social network engines and to analyze the existence of brokers from social networks that support Hamsuardi and Risnawanto using qualitative research methods with case studies. This study uses the theory of political broker division by Aspinall (2014) by analyzing three broker divisions namely activist brokers, opportunist brokers, and clientelist brokers. The results of the study show that the activist brokers that the researchers found are loyal to fight for candidates without expecting profit, such as Javanese community leaders, Bundo Kanduang, and the Chairperson of PBVSI. Meanwhile, opportunist brokers with the hope of making a profit during the Pilkada, such as the head of the arts community, the head of a grassroots sports team, and the head of the RT. As well as clientelist brokers who expect long-term benefits with the selected candidates being Minangkabau traditional leaders, youth leaders, and wirid coach Yassin. Furthermore, the existence of each broker can be seen from their respective roles in society. Each of these social network engine brokers comes from formal and informal figures who already have a clear mass base and have established good relations with voters and candidates. So that brokers from social network engines are effective in accommodating and mobilizing the masses to elect candidates at the grassroots level
