Abstract

This research studies word formation in the English description of Emina cosmetic products. This study aimed to classify and analyze the word formation process used in describing cosmetic products and find the kind of word formation process that is the most dominant. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method in which the data are English words that contain word formation processes used in the description of Emina cosmetic products. The data are analyzed using the theory of word formation process proposed by George Yule (2010). The result of this study reveals that there are 73 English words that are formed through word formation processes. They can be categorized into six types of word formation processes: acronyms, borrowing, clipping, compounding, derivation, and multiple processes. Derivation appears to be the most dominant type of word formation in Emina’s cosmetic product description. They are formed by adding affixes at the beginning or the end of the root. Derivation process is one of the most productive ways to creates new words. This fact enables the cosmetic company creatively form new words to describe their products and attract customers. Moreover, some words are categorized as new words because they have not been listed in the English dictionary.
