Abstract

This thesis is research that compares the madness in the main character in Shakespeare's Hamlet and its adaptation for children by Edith Nesbit. This research applies a psychological approach, plus other theories: Michael Foucault's theory of madness, the theory of madness, personality, and Sigmund Freud's theory of ego defense mechanisms. The analysis begins by explaining Hamlet's madness in Shakespeare's work which is analyzed with Foucault's theory of madness and then related to Sigmund Freud's theory of madness. The analysis results show that Hamlet experiences madness in each of his acts. Hamlet's madness is then compared with the adapted version by Edith Nesbit, who modified Hamlet's story to be suitable for children.
