Abstract
This study discusses the negative politeness strategies in the WhatsApp chatting between students and lecturers of English Department of Universitas Andalas. This research is aimed to find out the negative politeness strategies that are used by the students to their lecturers through WhatsApp messages. This research also has the purpose to find out the factors of sociological variables that influence the students in using the negative politeness strategies to their lecturers. In conducting this research, the writer uses a qualitative approach to explore and develop the explanation of the object research. Based on the way qualitative approach in collecting the data, the writer interviews the students one by one for gathering the data through WhatsApp messages. The data are taken of the screenshots of recent personal WhatsApp messages from the English Department students 2019 to their lecturers. In this case, the writer chooses 24 samples from 89 students with the technique of purposive sampling that considers some requirement aspects from the samples to give the information. The samples give the screenshots of their WhatsApp chatting with 12 lecturers of English Department who are their teachers in the class, academic supervisors, and supervisors for the thesis. Accordingly, there are collected 27 data from the samples that are analyzed with the theory of politeness strategies and sociological variables influencing the choice of strategies by Brown and Levinson (1978). From 27 data, the students use 4 strategies from 10 negative politeness strategies and 3 factors of sociological variables influencing the choice of strategies. The negative politeness strategies that are used by the students consist of question, hedge, apologizes, give deference, and go on record as incurring a debt or as not indebting hearer. Meanwhile, the factors of sociological variables that influence the students to use those negative politeness strategies are social distance, absolute ranking, and relative power. In data analysis, the writer explains the context of the data that are analyzed from all of the conversations in the WhatsApp chatting and the theory of Yule (1996) and Cummings (2009) about context. Moreover, the writer describes the analysis of data based on the context of data and the theory Brown and Levinson (1978) for presenting the result of the analysis. The writer also uses the table and chart to show the most used strategy of negative politeness strategies and the most influential factors of sociological variables in using the negative politeness strategies in WhatsApp chatting between students and lecturers of English Department of Universitas Andalas.
