Abstract

This research aims at describing operational risks faced by PT. Sang Hyang Seri, a rice seed producing agribusiness, in 2014. Data was gathered through observation and key informant interviewing using risk assessment forms. Operational risks were identified and measured in terms of probability and impact before they were mapped. To measure the risks and their respective impacts the method of approximation was employed. The research found that operational risks faced by PT. Sang Hyang Seri were mostly human resource risks, technological risks, system risks, natural risks and external risks. Natural risks are the main risk faced by the agribusiness since they have high probability and high impact and located at the first quadrant of the cartesian diagram of risks map. In terms of seed production phases, the production phase of the seed in the contracted farmers farm is the riskiest phase, which is also in the first quadrant of the cartesian diagram (high probability and high impact). The findings of the research suggest that PT. Sang Hyang Seri should improve and prioritize the monitoring and controlling natural risks such as those coused by pests and deseases as well as those resulting from weather variability. Moreover, the agribusiness should also make a more binding contract with the farmers to ensure that the farmers comply with all the requirements in producing good rice seed for PT. Sang Hyang Seri.
