Abstract

Singing is an activity that uses language as the fundamental component to express feelings, thoughts, spirits, beliefs, and other expressions. There are many meanings and concepts in a song that are frequently related to human life. The writer or composer will compose the song with good lyrics that may contain meanings in order to make the listeners enjoy it. Meaning plays an important role in communication. It serves to convey information, relationships, or concepts from the writers or speakers to the readers or listeners. Meaning used to express thoughts or emotions generally includes literal and non-literal meaning. One type of nonliteral meaning which is subjective and does not interpreted in the same way by every language speakers. This research uses Leech's theory to analyze the connotative meaning in the lyrics of Maher Zayn's songs (1990). Since the data were presented in the form of song lyrics, a qualitative approach was applied in this study. The researcher collected data by reading the song lyrics and generating a list of the expressions that carry connotative meanings after downloading the songs and the lyrics. The results of the research show that 65 utterances in the lyrics of songs contain connotative meaning. Connotative meaning reflected in words and sentences. The words of the songs use connotations to paint pictures and create specific moods. Connotations in song lyrics are crucial for conveying messages and for creating types of feelings. The researcher advises the following researchers to conduct a study in the semantics field using various study objects, such as advertisements or magazines. Additionally, numerous theories may be applied in order to gain a deeper understanding of connotative meaning.
