Abstract

This study analyzes Alice Walker's self-discovery as reflected in her novel, Now is the Time to Open Your Heart. This self-discovery can be recognized through Walker's main character, Kate. In conducting this research, the author uses ecofeminism theory by Karen J. Warren and applies expressive approach by Abrams. The data in this study are analyzed using qualitative methods and presented using descriptive methods. The primary data are obtained from the novel itself, Now is the Time to Open Your Heart and the supporting data are obtained from Walker's biography, books, journals, speeches, and interview scripts related to the topics discussed. The results of the research, first, the author represented women as loving, caring, and strong creatures. Nature is represented with classic pastoral and wilderness. Second, there are four roles of nature in self-discovery. They are Nature as a means of giving peace, Nature as a source of inspiration, Nature as a Means of Spiritual Healing, and Nature as a means for reconciling people with the past.
