Abstract

This study aims to analyze the reader's response to women and blackness in Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe. In this case, the researcher wants to see the factors that influence the respondents in creating meaning related to the problems that occurred in black women and white women in Uncle Tom's Cabin. The respondents of this study were students of the 2018 English Department at Andalas University. With the reader-response theory from Louise Rosenblatt, it can be seen whether the problem of women and blackness in Uncle Tom's Cabin can be fully understood or interpreted differently by readers. This study uses qualitative methods with research steps; namely collecting the data, conducting surveys related to the selection of respondents, collecting data through online questionnaires, and textual analysis. Data analysis was carried out in stages; namely analyzing data and presenting data. The results of the study indicate that two factors influence respondents in creating meaning, namely the knowledge factor and the personal experience factor. The effect of this reading on respondents has a good effect, where respondents can create their perspective from the point of view of women in viewing the problems that occur to women in the story of Uncle Tom's Cabin.
