Abstract

This thesis discusses the study of impoliteness strategies used by readers in the comment section of James Charles’s tweet on his Twitter account. The study aims to identify and describe the types and factors of impoliteness used by readers. The data of this research is the impoliteness strategies addressed by netizen in James Charles’s tweet relate to the apology of flirting with a minor. The theory of the impoliteness strategy proposed by Culpeper applied to apply this type of impoliteness. Furthermore, the results of this study are present descriptively using tables. The analysis shows that 23 utterances containing four types of impoliteness used by the reader. The types are (1) Bald on Record 5 times (22%), Positive Impoliteness 10 times (43%), Negative Impoliteness 2 times (9%) and Sarcasm or Mock Politeness 6 times (26%). Then, the last type of withhold politeness is not find. The most common impoliteness strategy used is positive impoliteness because the netizens accused James of what he did in the past and now the same case is happening again. The netizens call him by other names and use taboo words. There are three factors found in utterance. Based on this study, affective impoliteness became the most function used by readers with twelve data. It happens because James’s triggered the netizen of James’s utterance. This situation makes the netizen emotional and attacks James’s back. Then, coercive impoliteness became the second most function used by readers in James Charles's tweets of eight data. The last type is entertaining impoliteness is the less dominant type of three data. Keywords: Impoliteness Strategy, James Charles, Pragmatics, Twitter.
