Abstract

This thesis is a research on the psychological issues of the main character, John, from two novels by J. M. Coetzee, Boyhood and Youth. This research is done by applying psychological approach with several specific theories: Sigmund Freud’s personality theory, Erik Erikson’s psychosocial development theory, and Melvin Seeman’s theory of Alienation. The analysis process is oriented on the personality development of John from his childhood to adulthood in order to identify the problems and psychological conflicts that lead him to identity crisis and alienation. The result of analysis shows that John is failed on every development stages which lead him to identity crisis in his adolescence. At the end, John’s failure in personality development is the main factor that makes him alienated himself from the society.
