Abstract
This research discusses the issues of the major character’s anxiety and self-defense mechanism in We Are Okay, a novel by Nina LaCour. This research aims to identify types of anxiety and self-defense mechanisms suffered by Marin and Mabel in We Are Okay. In analyzing this research, the writer applies the psychoanalysis theory by Sigmund Freud, including anxiety and self-defense mechanism. This study uses a descriptive method to present the results of this research. From analysis, it can be concluded that LaCour depicts that the major character in this novel suffers three types of anxiety: realistic, neurotic, and moral anxiety. LaCour depicts that anxiety make the major characters feel miserable conditions in living their life. The major characters use self-defense mechanisms to cope with painful feelings from their anxiety. LaCour portrays self-defense mechanisms that occur in this novel, which are avoidance, denial, repression regression, intellectualization, and rationalization.
