Abstract

This research aims to find out if there are differences in perceptions of accounting students at State Universities and Private Universities in Padang City in choosing a career to become a public accountant. Factors that influence career selection include financial rewards, work environment, professional recognition, job market considerations and intrinsic values. The population of this research is the accounting students of State Universities and Private Universities in Padang City. While the study sample consited of 265 respondents batch 2017 and 2018 obtained by purposive sampling method technique. Data collection was carried out by questionnaires and processed with the help of SPSS Version 25. The results showed that the variables of professional recognition, job market considerations and intrinsic value had a significant effect on career selection as a public accountant. However, the variables of financial rewards and work environment did not significantly affect the selection of a career as a public accountant. While in the different tests, the results showed that on thevariables of financial rewards, work environment, professional recognition, job market considerations and intrinsic values there was no significant difference to the perception of accounting students at State Universities and Private Universities in choosing a career to become a public accountant.
