Abstract

Atopic dermatitis is a common skin inflammation and a major cause of the burden of non-fatal disease in dermatology. The incidence reaches 230 million cases with a prevalence of 15%-30% in children and 5%-10% in adults. The etiology remains unclear. Probiotics are bacteria that have the potential to be an adjunct therapy for atopic dermatitis. This systematic literature review was conducted to determine the effect of oral probiotic supplementation as adjunctive therapy in atopic dermatitis patients. This literature study is a systematic literature review. Literature searches were carried out in three databases, namely Pubmed, Proquest, and The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL). There are 11 studies included in this systematic literature review. All studies showed a significant increase in the SCORAD index and 6 studies showed an improvement in quality of life in atopic dermatitis patients. The probiotics given were Lactobacillus at a dose of9-1010 CFU and 350 mg once to twice a day for 8-16 weeks, a mixture of Lactobacillus 4x109 CFU once daily for 12 weeks, Bifidobacteria 1010 CFU once daily for 12 weeks, and a mixture of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria 1x109 CFU twice daily for 12 weeks. Probiotics provide a therapeutic effect in the form of decreasing the SCORAD index and improving the patient's quality of life, and can be used as an additional therapeutic option in atopic dermatitis patients.
