Abstract

This research examines the realization of ideational grammatical metaphor in The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde short story by Robert Louis Stevenson. This research focuses on transitivity process such as material process, mental process, behavioral process, verbal process, relational process, existential process and meteorogical process, which construct the ideational grammatical metaphor found in text resource. It also concentrates on nominalization as one of the most flexible feature in creating grammatical metaphor in the story by altering one word class to another especially verb to noun, noun to verb, adjective to verb and adjective to noun alteration . In analyzing the data, the author uses theory of language meta-function proposed by Halliday (2004). The author finds that material process appears more frequent than other processes and verb to noun alteration is the most dominant nominalization used in the text. In addition, it has been revealed that ideational grammatical metaphor potentially lead to material process as the main process in most of literary worksand nominalization is the expression tool carrying more messages with fewer words which helps producing a simpler and more creative text. Keywords : Ideational grammatical metaphor, transitivity, nominalization
