Abstract

Background : Hypertension is the conditon of systolic blood pressure level ≥140 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure level ≥90 mmHg. If left untreated, hypertension can impair function of another organs especially the vital organs such heart and kidneys. Hypertension does not only attack in the old age but also in the young age. Smoking cigarette is one of precipitating factors of hypertension. The prevalence of smoker in Indonesia tends to increase especially in developing adolescent , consequently, the present teen smoker has the factor to suffer from hypertension in the future. Objective : To determine the correlation of smoking habit and blood pressure among student in SMKN 1 Padang. Methods : The research was an analytic study using by cross-sectional design. The sample was 111 students of grade XI SMKN 1 Padang divided by inclusion and exclusion criteria. The study was held on 25th of September 2014. The smoking status assessed using questionnaires of Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) which have been adapted and combined with Brinkman index. Furthermore, the assessment of blood pressure was by using mercury sphygmomanometer and stethoscope. The data were processed manually. Result : This research found there are 68 students (61,3%) were non-smoker and 43 students (38,7%) were smoker. Mean systolic blood pressure is 112,57 mmHg and mean diastolic blood pressure is 70,05 mmHg. From the result, there is 2,1 mmHg difference in systolic blood pressure, lower in smoker than non-smoker and 2,92 mmHg difference in diastolic blood pressure, lower in smoker than nonsmoker. From statistical data analysis of cigarette smoking and systolic blood pressure obtained p = 0,15, This means that there is no differences occurrences of cigarette smoking and systolic blood pressure (p>0,05). Whereas the statistical data analysis of cigarette smoking and diastolic blood pressure obtained p = 0,078, Which is meant there is no differences occurrences of cigarette smoking and diastolic blood pressure (p>0,05). Conclusion : The results showing no correlation of smoking habit and either systolic or diastolic blood pressure. Keywords : Smoking habit, blood pressure
