Abstract
This thesis discusses the study of impoliteness strategies used by the commentator of Emmanuel Macron’s speech in Al Jazeera English news commentary column on Youtube entitled Macron says Islam in Crisis, prompting backlash from Muslims. The purpose of this study was to determine the language impoliteness strategies and impoliteness functions used by critics in commenting on Al Jazeera News broadcasts on Youtube. This research is categorized as descriptive research. The analysis was carried out by identifying and classifying data related to the impoliteness strategy formulated by Culpeper (1996), the impoliteness function proposed by Culpeper (2011), and the context described by Leech (1983). Furthermore, the data is presented in the form of a descriptive explanation. The results of this study indicate that there are four impoliteness strategies used by critics, namely (a) bald on record impoliteness, (b) positive impoliteness, (c) negative impoliteness, and (d) sarcasm or mock politeness. Negative impoliteness is the most used impoliteness strategy by critics. This research also found that there are two kinds of functions of impoliteness by critics, namely (a) affective impoliteness and (b) entertaining impoliteness.
