Abstract
In this thesis, the writer discusses the impoliteness strategies and the function of impoliteness contained in eight formal meeting EWC663 videos on YouTube. This study aims to identify the types of impoliteness strategies and functions of impoliteness used by speakers when refusing in the formal meeting. The theory of impoliteness strategies developed by Culpeper (1996) is used to identify the types of impoliteness strategies used by the speaker when refusing in the formal meeting. The theory developed by Culpeper (2011) is used to analyze the function of impoliteness of the data found in this study. The data in this study were obtained by observing the language they used in conversation at the meeting. The results of the analysis are presented descriptively and summarized in the table. From the results of data collection, the authors found (36) impolite utterances used by speakers when refusing and then chose (11) utterance data representing all types of impoliteness strategies expressed by Culpeper (1996). These types of strategies are grouped into 5 strategies; (1) bald on record impoliteness, (2) positive impoliteness, (3) negative impoliteness, (4) off-record impoliteness, and (5) withhold impoliteness. The results showed that the impoliteness strategy often used by speakers in formal meetings was bald on record impoliteness as much as 13 times (37%). The most frequently used function in this study was the coercive function as much as 25 times (69.44%).
