Abstract

This research analyzed the democratization that happened in Myanmar from period 2003-2011 after Myanmar was ruled by the military since 1962. This research used the theory of democratization by Jean Grugel who reveals that there are three key actors in the democratization of a country, namely the state civil society, and international actors. Furthermore, this research applied qualitative method with descriptive-analytic approach. The data concerning this thesis was obtained through the library research. The reading sources acquired were from journals, articles and the internet. The findings of this research shows that the democratization in Myanmar is also affected by the three actors mentioned by Jean Grugel, namely the state , civil society, and international actors. The role of the state can be seen through emergence of seven steps roadmap to discipline-flourishing democracy policy that announced by Myanmar’s government in 2003 which used to realization of the institutional changes to aim democracy system, then the role of civil society can be seen through the involved of students and exile groups on Deyapin Massacre and demonstration in 2007 by monks. While the role of international actors can be seen through the pressure given toward Myanmar’s military government such as sanctions from the US, EU, UN and ASEAN.
