Abstract
Strauss focuses his analysis towards the human mind. Human mind is the raw material of a tales, adopting Freud’s opinion about “dream”; myth basically is an expression of the unconscious wishes. (2006:79) The message contained by a tale is not obviously emphasized. Since it is a product of imaginations- which is abstract- in many cases the message that want to be informed by the author or story teller (if it is still a spoken-literature) is not structured yet. Strauss in Ahimsa’s book entitled Strukturalisme Levi Strauss, Mitos dan Karya Sastra stated Myth is equal to language. Both of them are part of culture and civilization which are product of human mind. Further, Strauss in Ahimsa’s stated; “Myth is language, functioning on an especially high level where meaning succeeds practically at “taking off” from the linguistic ground on which keeps on rolling.” (2006:85) Strauss also believes that myth, like language, also has its own structures. In his theory Strauss got so much influenced from linguistic science which Strauss considered as a new “gate” for any social sciences. King Arthur is one legend that contains many symbolic aspects and mythical figures which, writer believe, has many relations that can be laid down into a new form of structure that will shows a meaning or the hideous theme of the story. The character of Arthur itself still leaves many mysteries such his birth and his death. Considering all the matters above, the writer therefore decides to conduct a research towards the manuscripts of Le Morte D’Arthur , The Story of King Arthur and of His Knights of the Round Table which was written by Sir Thomas Mallory and edited and printed by William Caxton into a novel form during 1480s, by using Levi- Strauss’s myth-structuralism theory.
