Abstract

Falls are a common phenomenon in elderly called geriatric giants and are associated with considerable morbidity and mortality. A variety of factors can cause falls, but the major risk factors for falls are instability and gait disturbances. One of those sensitive and objective method to asses instability and gait disturbances that requires minimal equipment is The Timed Up and Go test. This study was aimed to reveal the relation between instability, gait disturbances and falls in elderly. This was an observational analitycal study. Samples were 50 patiens from Panti Sosial Tresna Werdha Sabai Nan Aluih Sicincin December 2012 to March 2013 period, Fulfilling all the inclusion criteria. Data including timed up and go test and frequency of falls in the previous year were analyzed by chi square correlation test by SPSS 17.0 for Windows. From 50 patients , there were 46% or 23patients who fell in the previous year. Chi square correlation test showed that there was significant correlation (p<0,05) between instability, gait disturbances and falls in a previous year.
