Abstract

The Asteraceae family is one of the plants that has been used by the community as a traditional medicine because it contains bioactive compounds such as sesquiterpenes, lactones, triterpenes, alkaloids, tannins, polyphenols, saponins and sterols. This study aims to determine the class of secondary metabolites, compare antioxidant activity, and total phenolic content of several plant species of the Asteraceae family. In this study, five plant species of the Asteraceae family from different genera were used, namely sambung rambat, urang aring, bandotan, marigold and kirinyuh. n-hexane and methanol were used to extract chemical compounds by maceration method with ultrasonic assistance. The antioxidant activity test was carried out using the DPPH method, while the determination of the total phenolic content using the Folin-Ciocaltaeu method. The results showed that the antioxidant activity of each species was different. The highest antioxidant activity was possessed by sambung rambat leaf methanol extract with IC50 of 93.3439 mg/L, followed by kirinyuh leaf methanol extract with IC50 of 94.0906 mg/L, marigold leaf methanol extract with IC50 of 131.1695 mg/L, urang aring leaf methanol extract with IC50 of 139.8284 mg/L and bandotan leaf extract with IC50 of 149.1315 mg/L. The highest total phenolic content was also found in the sambung rambat leaf metanhol extract, which was 4.7647 mg GAE/g dry extract, followed by kirinyuh, marigold, bandotan and urang aring leaf methanol extracts at 3.0735, respectively; 1.3823; 0.8676; and 0.7205 mg GAE/g dry extract.
