Abstract
In this study, addition of urea was varied in the Spirulina platensis’ growth medium. Effect of the addition of urea was observed on Spirulina platensis the growth. It was used for the production of lipids and omega-3 fatty acids. Growth of Spirulina platensis was observed to see the growth characteristics, the initial optical density used was 0.229, 0.129 and 0.078 were obtained from Spirulina platensis cultures and the medium ratio used were 1: 1, 1: 3 and 1: 7 (v/v). Medium with the urea concentration of 0.200 g/L gave the best growth of Spirulina platensis. Growth characteristics showed the best generation time occurred at the culture with initial optical density 0.078, while the best growth rate in cultures with initial optical density 0.129. Spirulina platensis grown in a medium containing urea 0.200 g/L, experiencing exponential phase peak at 19 days, dried Spirulina platensis biomass yield 6.568 g in 1 L of medium. Base on solvent extraction method, lipid contained of Spirulina platensis biomass is 12.92% . From Gas Chromatography Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS) chromatogram, Spirulina platensis contained eicosapentaenoic methyl ester is equal to 3.03% as one of the omega-3 fatty acids. However, in this study have not got the concentrated of omega-3 fatty acids. Concentrate methyl esters obtained only 37.42% methyl hexadecanoic and 39.83% methyl Z-9-
