Abstract

Technology, such as smartphones and computers, has been growing rapidly to help humans living their everyday life. Human, as the user interacts through an interface that is called user interface (UI), and the experience that the user is having is called a user experience (UX). UI and UX are inseparable as a good user interface will result in a better user experience. Portal Unand is a web-based app that has all the information related to academics and it also connects students and academic staff. An initial survey was conducted to find out student’s thoughts on Portal Unand. The result is 80.6% of the users have some complaints towards the Portal Unand interface. 64.3% users complained that they have to zoom in/zoom out while using the portal, 53.3% users complained about the unattractive design, 47% users complained about the non-responsive design, 41.9% users experience difficulties in pressing the buttons, 35.7% said that the important features are not highlighted, and others stated that the information is not up to date, too many texts on the home screen, and the server. These things are not in accordance with some of the UX law, such as Postel’s law and Hick’s law. Hence, it reduces user experience in using Portal Unand. Users were also asked their thoughts on Portal Unand redesign and 89.9% said that Portal Unand needs a redesign. In this study, a redesign is done by using the design thinking process. The method consists of five steps such as empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. The method focuses on users goals and needs as it involves users from the beginning of the design process. The empathize step was done by distributing questionnaires to Andalas University students. The questionnaire result was then analyzed to define the problem by creating an affinity diagram and a user persona. Then, the user persona was used as a guide to ideate the solution for target users by creating user journey maps and user flow. User flow was then used to identify which page was needed to create the prototype. After the prototype was done, usability testing was conducted by using Maze and System Usability Scale (SUS). The score of usability testing was 84 which fell into the high range. The SUS score was 83.33 which fell into grade A and acceptable category. As the new prototype managed to fulfill users’ needs and met users’ expectations, it can be concluded that the prototype was usable and ready to be developed.
