Abstract

This research discusses the embracing of cultural diversity as a way to fight racism against African-Americans reflected in the selected multicultural children’s picture books. The selected multicultural children’s picture books are For Beautiful Black Boys Who Believe in a Better World by Michael W. Waters, Something Happened in Our Town by Marianne Celano, Marietta Collins, and Ann Hazzard, Shiloh and Dande the Lion by Ciara L. Hill, and Sulwe by Lupita Nyong’o. This research analyzes the kinds of racism against African-Americans reflected in the selected children’s book. It also explores how the authors and illustrators present the embracing of cultural diversity through children’s picture books. The writer applies the Sociological Theory of Literature by Alan Swingewood and is supported by the Multiculturalism approach. In this research, the writer found that violence, police brutality, and discrimination are the forms of racism experienced by the majority of African-Americans. Furthermore, the writer also found that embracing cultural diversity begins among the African-American community and extends to other Americans in their interracial interaction. Keywords: embracing cultural diversity, racism, African-American, multiculturalism, children’s book. Buku bergambar anak-anak yang bertemakan multikultural terpilih itu adalah For Beautiful Black Boys Who Believe in a Better World oleh Michael W. Waters, Something Happened in Our Town oleh Marianne Celano, Marietta Collins dan Ann Hazzard, Shiloh and Dande the Lion oleh Ciara L. Hill, dan Sulwe oleh Lupita Nyong’o.
