Abstract

In this thesis the writer discusses onomatopoeia, especially the types and translation strategies found in the English novel entitled The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, which has been translated into Indonesian by Barokah Ruziati and published by Gramedia Pustaka Utama. This study aims to find out what onomatopoeia used in the novel along with the types and to analyzes the strategies used by translators to translate them into Indonesian. The method applied in data collection using observation methods and note-taking techniques. Data analysis used the translational equivalent method, namely by comparing the source language with the target language. In analyzing the data, the writer refers to the theory of Indah Lestari (2020) to identify the classification of onomatopoeia, and to categorizes the types of onomatopoeia the writer uses the theory of Hugh Bredin (1996), for the translation strategy the writer uses theory of Baker (1992). From the results of data collection, the writer found 38 onomatopoeias in the novel. Then the 38 data were analyzed; the writer found 2 translation strategies used by the translator from 8 strategies proposed by Baker; namely Translation by a more general word, and Translation by more neutral word/less expressive. The writer also finds all the classifications of onomatopoeia proposed by Lestari. The 3 classifications are human sounds, animal sounds, and natural sounds. For the types, the writer found 2 types of onomatopoeia from 3 types proposed by Bredin, namely direct and associative onomatopoeia.
