Abstract

This thesis explains the use of tense, aspect, and modal with the functions used by Bleacher Report’s journalist in three selected news stories about Cristiano Ronaldo who is infected Corona virus which was uploaded on October 20th, 2020. The data was collected by re-typing the news on the Bleacher Report news portal. The data that has been collected are then analyzed based on the theory purposed by Comrie (1986) to analyze the type and function of tense, then the theories of Comrie (1976) and Cann (1993) to analyze the types and functions of aspect, and the theories of Quirk (1980) and Kreidler (1998) to analyze the type and function of modal. There are two types of tense from eighty-five data found, namely the present tense and the past tense. The dominant type of tense found is the present tense. This shows that the Bleacher Report’s journalists write more news from the perspective of the journalists themselves so that the present tense becomes the dominant one to emerge. The writer finds three types of aspect, namely simple, perfective, and progressive. The type of aspect most journalists used is simple aspect, because many of sentences and clauses written by journalist do not indicate specific times when an action begins and ends so it can be categorized as a simple aspect. The writer also finds two types of modal, namely ordinary and auxiliary. The dominant type of modal found is ordinary, which indicates that journalists use a lot of modal to anticipate misunderstanding from the readers.
