Abstract

Assessment for increasing productivity of suboptimal land with using two kinds of cover crop and three soil type had been conducted in the experimental field of biology, Department of biology, Andalas University. Purpose of the assessment were to determine the effect of soil with lack of nutrients in trigger the germination and growth of cover crop and determine the effect of two species cover crop Mucuna barcteata and Mucuna pruriens to increase chemical and physical properties in sub-optimal land. Study used a split plot design with four replications, where the main plot was three types of soil (Inceptisol, Ultisol and Entisol), while the subplot was two species of cover crop (M. bracteata and M. pruriens). The study results showed that the use of M. pruriens on Ultisol and Entisol show the best performance based on germination percentage, vigor index, fresh and dry weight parameters. Growth factor of cover crop use M. pruriens on Inceptisol soil show the best performance based on plant height average, stem biomass, root biomass, number of root parameters. The application of M. bracteata and M. pruriens significantly increased soil N-total and P-availability. But, have negligible impacts on K-add, permebility, total soil porosity and bulk density. The potential cover crop M. pruriens used in this study was capable of significantly improving soil chemical properties.
