Abstract

The nutritional problem on each member of the family are not only about food issues, knowledge and skills, but also dealing with other problems like malnutrition and low arrangement of multi-unit approach. So that the settlement process should be conducted holistically. In Pekanbaru City, nutritional problems in toddlers were still found. Although a lot of programs and efforts of the government have been running to solve it, but based on the obtained data, nutritional problems still could not be resolved. In response to these problems, this study provides an innovation by involving the independency of the family through the role of community leaders. The purpose of this study was to determine the Effect of Family Empowerment through The Role of Community Leaders in the Improvement of Nutritional Status of Toddlers in Pekanbaru City. The research method was Community Experiment Research, by conducting direct research to the community in the intervention group and the control group. The combined analysis used quantitative methods to 81 (eighty one) of respondents on mothers who have children with nutritional problems. The analysis used qualitative methods to 7 (seven) community leaders and 1 (one) health worker. The implementation of the research by conducting a qualitative analysis phase to reinforce the results obtained quantitatively. The results showed that the respondent education was in the medium category, with the average of 51.6 percent of women were as housewives who have minimal education levels and became an indicator for community leaders to conduct coaching and mentoring. Community leaders interact in moving the independence of the family in improving the health of toddlers with nutritional problems. Although the knowledge, and food parenting pattern of the respondent were statistically not significant, but attitude and the awareness of the importance of health care visits obtained better results is significant p<0,05 as well as changes in weight of toddlers as an indicator of good nutritional status. The novelty in this study were community leaders who accompanied the family in health activities, have a role as a role model, providing knowledge, social support to the family in preparing the dimension of time, effort and thought to identify a range of nutritional problems in toddlers. They have succesfully managed to move the wife of RW Leader and the wife of the RT Leader as the community leaders in their social environment. The ability of community leaders together with the respondent had the same commitment to improve the health level of family members. There has been an establishment of Follow-up Plans (RTL) reinforced with Family Empowerment Program- Based on Community Leaders Approach (PKBP-TOMA) through "Mothers Concern Group". This program can be implemented by government institutes and related units ranging from Public health centers to Posyandu
