Abstract

This research focuses on the discourse contestation between 1984 by George Orwell and 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami in political and ideological context. The data is elicited by reading the two novels critically and identify the texts that contain ideological and political discourses. The ideological and political discourses that have been identified are analyzed by using Political Unconscious theory; a postmodern theory proposed by Fredric Jameson. Furthermore, the writer uses a hermeneutic theory proposed by Hans-Georg Gadamer called The Assimilation of Horizons theory in order to see which ideological and political discourse from the two novels that are more relevant to current social conditions. The analysis shows that politic and ideological discourse in Murakami’s 1Q84 is considered far more relevant comparing the ones in Orwell’s 1984.
