Abstract
ABSTRACT Background : Preeclampsia is a severe complication of pregnancy characterized by multisystemic dysfunction and endothelial damage that leads to hypertension, changes in adipokines and increased inflammation. Due to this condition of pregnancy, maternal circulating leptin, placental leptin gene expression and protein levels increased compared with normal pregnancy. Increased plasma leptin levels in preeclampsia with increased gestational age can be taken independently or with other parameters as a marker for the severity of Preclampsia. Another advantage of this leptin examination are more simple, faster in detecting the severity of preeclampsia, as well as less expensive and more. Method : This study has been performed with a cross-sectional method in delivery room, polyclinic of Dr. M. Djamil Hospital and Biomedical Laboratories Medical Faculty of Andalas University from December 2013 until the number of samples met. The target of population is the single pregnant women throughout the third trimester (> 28 weeks) on the clinic and the delivery room of Dr. M. Djamil hospital, number of samples in this study of 68 people. The analysis used to determine differences in maternal serum leptin levels in third trimester of pregnancy (> 28 weeks) in preeclampsia and normal pregnancy is a T test on the data of normal distribution and Wilcoxon test on the data that are not normally distributed. If p <0.05 indicates significant results. Result : Differences in maternal leptin serum levels in normal pregnancy had mean levels of 1588.7964 ± 8.01074 ng / mL and in maternal preeclampsia had mean of leptin serum levels is 1608.1725 ± 6.69579 ng / mL. So that there is a statistically significant difference in mean maternal serum leptin levels between groups of pregnancies with preeclampsia compared with normal pregnancy (P <0.05) Conclusions : There are significant differences in maternal serum leptin levels between women with preeclampsia and normal pregnancies. Keywords : Leptin, Preeclampsia
