Abstract

This research discusses the subtitling strategies of English television series (TV series) translated into Indonesian. This research aims to find out what subtitling strategies are applied in translating each utterance in the American TV series Why Women Kill. This research is also conducted to find out the effects of the strategy application on the utterance meaning in the target language. The data of this research are taken from the first episode of Why Women Kill TV series, which is accessed through a streaming service called Catchplay. Data collection is done by using an observational method and note-taking technique. Each utterance and its translation are noted and classified in table form. The subtitling strategy analysis on the data is based on the theory proposed by Henrik Gottlieb in Dollerup & Loddegaard’s book (1992), which is developed by Sugeng Hariyanto (2005). The analysis of meaning shift in the target language is based on the theory proposed by Abdul Chaer (1995). From the results of data analysis, it is found that the subtitler applies 10 out of 11 subtitling strategies, namely: expansion, paraphrase, transfer, imitation, transcription, dislocation, condensation, decimation, deletion, and taming. In translating some utterances, it is found that the subtitling strategy application causes broadening, narrowing, shifting, refinement (euphemism), coarsening, and loss of meaning in the target language.
