Abstract

This thesis discusses about translation strategies of culturally-bound sentences found in the novel from English to Indonesia. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to find the cultural terms in the sentence and the strategy that translator apply to translate the sentence. The data are taken from the novel entitled Little Women by Louisa May Alcott and its translation Gadis-Gadis March by Annisa Cinantya Putri and Widya Kirana. In analyzing the data, the researcher applies cultural categories proposed by Newmark (1988) and translation strategies proposed by Baker (1992) by using translational identity method by Sudaryanto (1993). There are 38 data in total after reduction, the researcher found five cultural terms, social organization, material culture, social culture, ecology, and gesture and habit. Six translation strategies, they are translation by paraphrase using a related word, translation using a loan word, translation by paraphrase using unrelated word, translation by a more neutral or less expressive word, translation by cultural substitution, and translation by a more general word (superordinate). However, when translating the cultural term there are couple of sentences become untranslatable known as untranslatability. This problem analyze by applying the theory of untranslatability by Baker (1992). The researcher found the most dominant untranslatability occurs because of the culture-specific concept.
