Abstract
Burn is the fourth most common injury in the world that cause high morbidity and mortality. Mortality in case of burns is still quite high. Major burn (>20% total body surface area) causes excessive systemic response so it is the risk of causing death. This study aimed to determine characteristics of patients who died from major burn at RSUP Dr. M. Djamil Padang. This was a descriptive study with retrospective design using secondary data from medical records of patients who died from major burn at RSUP Dr. M. Djamil Padang in 2016-2019. The research data were consisted of 38 medical records. Parameters investigated include patient’s demographics, etiology of burn, burn size, depth of burn injury, and complication of burn injury. The data will be presented in the frequency distribution table. The result of the statistical analysis showed that 18-45 years old (65,8%) became the largest age group of patients who died from major burn. Mortality is more common in males with a ratio 3,75 : 1 between males and females. In patients who died from major burn, 84,22% were caused by thermal injury, 47,4% had a 21-40% total burn surface area, with grade 2 and 3, and 44,7% with sepsis complication. Characteristics of patients who died from major burn commonly found in productive age and males. Thermal injury is the most etiology that cause of burn.
