Abstract

This research aims to describe Agus Salim's diplomacy effort in his attempt to achieve Indonesia's first "de jure" recognition by Egypt. The importance of official recognition for Indonesian independence aims to support for Indonesia as a sovereign government and free from the threat of the colonial government. The conceptual framework used in analyzing this research is diplomacy through integrative negotiations by Thompson. Integrative negotiations place more emphasis on determining what are the primary needs of both negotiating parties, not just emphasizing demands and targets of one of the negotiators. The research method used is exploratory research. This research discovered that the main interest in Agus Salim’s diplomacy was to obtain official recognition of sovereignty and support to fight colonial government that attempted to put pressure after Indonesian independence. By means of his diplomatic missions, Agus Salim managed to get Egypt’s official recognition for Indonesia’s independence and support from Arab League countries. Moreover, Indonesia and government of Egypt signed trade agreements to strengthen bilateral relations between both countries. Keywords : Indonesia, Agus Salim, De jure, Diplomacy, Negotiation
