Abstract
ABSTRACT This study exists to overcome the issues and challenges in implementing lean in the world, especially in Malaysia. There is lack of investigate about success lean implementation. The general research objective of this study was to investigate the effect of lean enablers on lean implementation in Universiti Malaysia Pahang. The objectives in specially were to examine the structural effect of nine of enablers (employee training, employee commitment, employee understanding, management commitment, management understanding, time for improvement work, resources for improvement work, change agent, and bi-directional vertical information flow) on lean implementation using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) with Partial Least Square (PLS). Data was collected from 120 academic staff in Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) using a cross-sectional study based on research which was questionnaire as an instrument. The findings confirm there is a positive effect between time for improvement work, resources for improvement work, and change agent on lean implementation, but there is no positive effect of employee training, employee commitment, employee understanding, management commitment, management understanding, and bi-directional vertical information flow on lean implementation. The differences of findings from most of the literature that stated the relationship between the nine enablers on lean implementation is caused by the background of the respondent where they have lack of knowledge how to implement lean. This study brings further insight toward the relationship between lean enablers and lean implementation. Therefore, this study also contributes to close the existing gaps of limited studies about lean university and contribute to the body of knowledge related to the lean university, lean enablers, and lean implementation effects of theoretically and practically. Keywords: change agent, employee commitment, employee training, employee understanding, lean enablers, lean implementation, management commitment.
