Abstract

This research shows the analysis on the issue of alienation of a novel entitled The Catcher in the Rye by J. D Salinger. The main topic of this analysis is the issue of alienation on adolescent. Salinger represents human as an alienated adolescent in his work. Salinger implies that alienation have causes and effects. He also shows that alienation have a strong influence towards the development of an adolescent’s personality. The representation of alienation in the story is the source of the analysis to find the causes and the effects of alienation that happened towards adolescent life. In order to analyze the object of the research, the writer uses psychoanalysis method and applies the theoretical concept of Melvin Seeman. The method that used in analyzing the work is called Library Research Process method. After analyzing the work, the writer found that Salinger depicts that alienation is usually happens because of two main causes, namely; feeling of loss or grief and unfulfilled expectation. While, the effects implicitly seen from the story that are; trauma and denial that could irritate the development of adolescent’s personality.
